Nether Edge Farmers Market

Hooray!
Today the day finally arrived for the farmers market in nether edge!
I had been looking forward to it all week and it was fantastic!
The sun was out from 11 o clock and stayed around til 4 it was probably the nicest day we've had all year, very lucky indeed.

There was lots of entertainment including morris dancers, a brass band and bowling as well as all the wonderful stalls that ranged from cakes, cheese, meat, some vintage clothing, books etc it was all great and there was also a bar on the bowling green so I had a couple of pints of moonshine in the warm sun with friends which was very pleasant.

Here are a few photos from the event.

Coconut chicken with rice and peas and my moonshine - they were both delicious

So as you can see it was a truly wonderful day, beautiful weather and a chance to catch up with old friends and relax and just enjoy yourself.
I can't think of any other way I'd rather spend my day.

Creamy mushroom and kale puff pastry pillows

These are a delicious treat as the creamy mushroom part is very rich. I like to serve these simply on their own as a meal on the go or with salad. I used crimini mushrooms from waitrose but it works well with any variety. Ingredients 1 pack of mushrooms 1 onion butter curly kale splash white wine cream garlic puff pastry beaten egg Method
  1. First fry the onions with the garlic in butter til softened
  2. Add wine and let the onions absorb the wine, season with salt and pepper
  3. Add the mushrooms, fry until mushrooms are golden
  4. Add the cream, reduce for 5 mins and set aside
  5. Steam or saute some kale until cooked, season, set aside
  6. Cut puff pastry into squares
  7. Add a spoon of the kale to the middle of a square
  8. Add some mushrooms (not too much juice)
  9. Brush the eggs around the side and place another square of pastry on top
  10. Crimp with a fork to seal and make a small slit in the top
  11. Brush the egg on the top and bake for around 10 minutes or until puffed and golden

Yuen Shan

I was sitting in the pub with my friend drinking rum when we both realised we were getting rather hungry.

I remembered this place having visited there about 6 months ago and it being really good so I suggested we go visit.
It was only two doors down from the pub that we were in so we didn't have far to go.

We arrive and its full. Most of the customers are Chinese which is always a good sign when you're dining in a Chinese restaurant.
After waiting for about 5 minutes we are seated to our tables and are given the menu.

Its all you can eat for £11.99, its not a buffet as the food is cooked fresh to order but you just keep on ordering dishes until you can't eat any more.
You choose your dishes, write down the number on a piece of paper and hand it to the waiter.

There is free prawn crackers and green tea.
I'm not too keen on prawn crackers but my friend says they're the best ones he's ever had and I'm so hungry I eat a few anyway.
We also order some wine and it comes with an ice bucket.

Our food arrives soon and there is crispy wontons first which are mainly pastry with a tiny bit of prawn in the middle so we weren't too impressed by them.

Next is beef in satay sauce and thats tasty, can't taste any peanuts though but its still good nonetheless.

Malaysian lamb is next and arrives with pancakes, cucumber, hoi sin sauce and leeks, like crispy duck is normally served but with lamb instead.
I prefer the lamb to duck because its very sweet and not as fatty as duck.

Shredded crispy chicken is basically strips of chicken skin that has been coated in a batter, deep fried and then covered in a very sweet sticky sauce. It tastes good but is very hard. This is the one we end up leaving the most of.

The spare ribs in chilli sauce however are very delicious, slow cooked pork so that it just falls off the bone. My friend realised this as he picked up a piece by the bone and it the meat just slid off and fell into the hoi sin sauce!

We're pretty stuffed but choose one more dish when the waiter returns - salt and pepper ribs which would be really tasty if they weren't so incredibly salty.

Stuffed, we force as much food down us as we can and ask for the bill which is around £32 so we leave £36. Good value food that is quite tasty.
I'll probably return when I fancy lots of tasty Chinese food for only £11.99.

Bragazzis

Today I decided it was about time to actually eat at bragazzis and not just go inside for coffee, luckily its not full and we can sit down.

The place is like stepping into Italy, theres a tv showing only Italian programmes and theres lots of Italian food you can purchase, the Italian art and the vespa in the corner really adds to the charm.

I've chosen a pecorino, sun dried tomato pesto, olive and baby leaf sandwich and my mum has a buffalo mozzarella, sun dried tomato and basil sandwich.
They are on tasty ciabatta and mines delicious, the strong, tangy sheeps cheese goes very well with the peppery leaves and sweet tomato pesto, its a very good sandwich indeed.
I wash it down with a can of peach ice tea which is so delicious I just love peach ice tea and everytime I go to Europe I drink loads of it

My mums is delicious as well but a little bland in flavour I feel, after eating my pecorino sandwich.
My sister and dad arrive and order more sandwiches, dad has the same as me but my sister has a very nice sandwich of salami, cheese, pesto and courgette.
Hers is toasted as well! I wasn't asked if I'd have liked mine toasted but stealing a bite of hers makes up for that.

Its delicious, she says its the best sandwich shes ever had in her life, theres good service here and its good coffee (not that I drink it but I've been told).

The cranberry and Belgian chocolate tiffin really finishes my meal beautifully and this place deserves 10/10

Along with some little bits from the deli that my mum buys it comes to just under thirty pounds, which is very good and worth it for the quality of food.
I even bought a block of the pecorino which I shall fry later on and have it with a little salad for supper.

Yabba Caribbean Food

After sampling various pickles and jams that yabba make and sell at festivals and other markets and enjoying them I decide to check out there newish cafe to see what its like.

The decor is really cute, bright colours everywhere and paintings of Jamaican people and festivals and sunsets. Theres the jams and pickles and chilli sauces for you to sample and add to your food and a tasty looking menu.

I go for ackee and saltfish in a tortilla wrap, its ok theres some good chunks of ackee but the overall texture is a bit too sloppy,I wouldn't have preferred it drier and I don't see any fish at all although I can taste it.

My mum goes for creole chicken with rice and peas and callaloo and cabbage, her chicken tastes delicious and I steal lots of it, its really well cooked and very moist.

I have a cup of milo which is sort of like hot chocolate but with vitamins and is Jamaica's national drink the friendly waitress tells me.

We leave very stuffed and the food is ok, not as good as the Caribbean food that I had at the earl though, I'm going to have a try and creating my own ackee and salt fish with rice and peas and if I'm successful I'll let you know!

Jabu Fondue and Dumpling House

Last night I went to Jabu in Sheffield and it was awesome, a totally different eating experience!

I arrived and the waitress asked me to choose from some dumplings to start, I chose lamb and coriander and they were delicious, I had it with a little bit too much of the chilli sauce and it was so spicy! After a few sips of my san miguel I was able to eat the rest of them. They are beautifully tender with good quality lamb and loads of juices which dribbled over my chin and down my chopsticks onto my fingers, I got very dirty hands here which is great if you don't mind getting stuck in.

Next we got given a little menu and ticked off the food that we wanted.
There was loads of different meats, seafood and vegetables and those were served with a huge bowl of your chosen stock. We chose satay and then chinese herbs, the bowl was split into two sections and placed on an induction hob and bubbled away ready for you to place your ingredients into.

We got some crispy pig skin as a side nibble (not to dip in the stock!), thinly sliced beef shin, whole crab, chinese lettuce, corn, beansprouts, wontons and noodles.
It was all very tasty and I loved the pig skin and the beef was very tender.
The crab was a bit of a challenge, and I struggled to crack into the claws for the tasty white meat, shell flying all over, much to the amusement of the chinese couple sat opposite me!

After stuffing our faces and making a total mess of the table and our faces and fingers we couldn't eat anymore. The place was great and I'd definitely come back. The only bad thing about it were the toilets which were the worst I've ever seen!

Oh and I got a new camera for christmas so all the photos are much better quality now, click for bigger pictures if you want.

Thyme Restaurant, Broomhill, Sheffield.

This lunchtime I decided to try out this restaurant as I've been wanting to go in for so long but never had the opportunity.
I get there at half one and its nearly full, there is blackboards on the walls with the different food items available and it all looks delicious.
Its mostly British with a bit of Italian such as bruschetta and risotto.
Me and my mum sit down and order some hot drinks as its bloody freezing outside! Hot chocolate and a cappuccino, our favourites.

I'm deciding what to choose whilst nibbling a few delicious mixed olives, they're tangy and with a kick of chilli and a few slivers of roasted peppers and thyme.
There is so many choices, from chicken and mushroom pie with mustard mash to shell on king prawns with dips, the most expensive item is 28 day matured rump steak which is
£18.

I decide on szechuan confit duck leg with roast sweet potato and pak choi.
It arrives after about 10 minutes and looks beautiful on the plate, such clean presentation and its cooked to perfection, crispy golden skin with just the right amount of fat with hints of spice and honey, meltingly soft flesh which requires no knife.
The sweet potato adds a welcome contrast to the rich meat and the crunch of the pak choi adds some texture too. Theres slivers of carrot which add colour, all adding up to a very delicious dish, very good for
£12.

I finish my meal with a slice of tiffin,
£2, its packed full of exotic fruits and nuts, crunchy biscuits and a thick rich chocolate layer on top. An excellent finish to a wonderful meal. This won't be my last visit!
